Android app ยท test build 0.1

Baoprog

Program a Baofeng UV-5R from your phone. Plug in the programming cable, read the radio, change its channels, and write them back. No computer needed.

Download the app (APK, 33 MB)

Version 0.1, built 31 October 2026. Android 7 or later.
SHA-256 319e4c29f01daae5c1d0932b97044d5a5173313d8c64bb98d8f45ba9475dce30

What it does

Read, edit, write

Copies every channel and setting off the radio, lets you add, change, sort and tidy them on the phone, then writes them back. The radio's calibration is never touched.

Backups every time

Each read keeps a backup on the phone, so you can always put the radio back exactly as it was.

UK repeater list built in

The RSGB's list of UK repeaters (from ukrepeater.net) comes with the app, filtered to the analogue FM ones a UV-5R can use. Add a repeater and its offset and tone are set for you.

Range map

A UK map that works offline. Tap where you are to see nearby repeaters and how likely each is to hear a handheld from there.

Ready-made channel lists

PMR446, UK 2 m and 70 cm simplex, marine VHF, and a short "comms survival" list of channels worth having on any radio.

Works with CHIRP

Opens and saves CHIRP images and CSV files, so you can move between the phone and CHIRP on a computer.

Practice radio

No cable yet? A pretend UV-5R inside the app lets you try everything safely. Nothing reaches a real radio.

What you need

  • An Android phone (Android 7 or later).
  • A Baofeng UV-5R or a radio in the same family.
  • A Baofeng USB programming cable, the kind with a two-pin plug for the radio. A USB-A cable needs a USB-C "OTG" adapter to fit the phone.

Installing it

  1. Tap Download the app above on your Android phone.
  2. Open the downloaded file. Android will ask you to allow installs from your browser: allow it, then tap Install. This is normal for apps that don't come from the Play Store.
  3. Plug the cable into the phone, and push its two-pin plug firmly into the radio's speaker and mic sockets. On a UV-5R it clicks in twice; a half-pushed plug is the usual reason a radio doesn't answer.
  4. Switch the radio on, open Baoprog and tap Read. The first time, Android asks whether Baoprog may use the cable: tick "Always".

Before you transmit. In the UK, transmitting on amateur bands and through repeaters needs an amateur licence, and marine channels need a ship radio licence and operator's certificate. The app marks channels you can only listen to.

This is an early test build. Keep the backup it makes when you first read your radio.
